I returned to writing a few years ago after not writing for a very long time. I wrote as a child and into my early 30s. For a while I worked at magazines, but I knew I was never going to do the kind of writing there I wanted to. I suppose considered myself a fiction writer. I started a family and became a teacher (I teach kids to write) and writing never seemed to be something I could make a priority. But really, I know now, more than a decade later, that I couldn't write because I wasn't ready to tell the truth. I'd been transcending things for a long time and writing was going to mean facing certain truths about my life. Well, now I'm facing them head on in my writing: a painful childhood, a failed marriage. I mostly write personal narrative and I'm currently at work on a memoir.
