When people speak about their identity, some include a dry sense of humour. Me? An art school dropout and a Harvard grad, I have a damp sense of death. (I live in British Columbia’s rainforest.)
As we baby-boomers round the final corner and realize we’re not immortal, we are figuring out how we’re going to ‘do’ old age. I write short stories and the novel Going Out In Style with characters that built the block they go around.
No longer satisfied by ‘coming of age’ books, I seek ‘second coming of age’ stories that reflect concerns about my life – aging and death. I crave darkly comic fairy tales of our time. I read and write stories to quench this need.
