I’ve always had at least two resumes. A twelve page academic vitae describes my education and experience as a teacher, a professor of Social Work, and as a therapist and co-founder/director of a behavioral health care clinic.
My second resume enumerates my dancing/performing artist self. Mother’s lifelong unfulfilled wish to take dancing classes resulted in my beginning dance classes at age 3. At ten, my brother’s interest in acting led to my joining him in improvisational acting classes. Eventually I danced in a regional ballet company, summer stock, nightclubs, film, and the road company of a Broadway show.
A few years ago, I started telling people, “I’m a dancing social worker,” when they asked me what I did. I bring the arts and social action together through teaching and performing InterPlay, a creative approach to unlocking the wisdom of the body and a social movement now in 60 cities and on five continents. After a five year focus on developing the skills of writing creative non-fiction I can say, “I’m a dancing social worker whose practice is to find the words to write about it all.
