How To Be Very Stupid When You Are Supposed To Be Intelligent

Posted on June 6, 2011 at 1:31pm 0 Comments

My life is incredibly busy...and incredibly boring as well. Don't get me wrong: boring is good. I suppose that, when I say "boring", I mean conventional. Again, "conventional" works for me. There is, however, something that bugs me since the DSK affair (see here).

How To Be Rejected In Style

Posted on April 12, 2011 at 2:06pm 0 Comments

Brits are very polite. At all times and in all circumstances. They never say "No". I once asked a colleague whether he had already used a new software I had heard about. I thought that it was a yes or no type of question. How naive of me. He replied "Not directly". I am still wondering what he meant. I have come to the conclusion that, in this instance he just couldn't say…

The Stuffed Cat's house

I have always liked London. I don’t really know why. Maybe it is because of the energy, the various parks and the narrow, cobbled streets. But I can’t help thinking that it is because London has all the ingredients of an organised chaos.

Hi Muriel!  I live in Michigan, US.  I just started blogging this past spring, so I'm relatively new to the whole thing.  Glad to have found your blog!

I would love you to return to the blog and set me straight any time my observations are way off the mark.  I just don't have enough French friends yet to say I know a cross-section of French culture.  But I'm trying. I want to be ready for when the dollar is stronger and we can buy property.  I want to understand everything better.

And thanks for your comment on my blog. Maybe writing about it was the spur I needed to join Facebook. So, please, find me/friend me.

Despite what you so clearly spell out as the challenges of raising bilingual children, I still think it's wonderful to have the syntax and nuances of more than one language at the tip of one's tongue.

Muriel, we will be in Kent when we finally move--at least temporarily (living next to my parents-in-law, heaven help me!). No idea where we will finally end up--near London but not in London.

Muriel, I have been reading your blog & enjoyed the entries about the 11+ (though they also worried me!). Our daughter Charlotte is 10 and we are currently getting her ready to take the 11+ in September and even have a tutor she meets with once a week via Skype. It's nervewracking! And no fun preparing for an exam in a country you don't even live in yet. (sigh)

At least I have a She Writes meet-up in London to look forward to when we've moved!

Muriel, can I just say I love your profile picture on your blog--it really sums up how I have been feeling lately. It made me smile...maybe I'm projecting, but the image was bristling with "What next?! Bring it on! I'll take it on!" which is how I feel most days lately trying to raise the kids, keep the boat of marriage afloat, read something from the growing stack (mostly unskimmed) of the two magazines I subscrribe to (Poetry, and P & W) and then random New Yorkers friends hand me etc...not to mention trying to journal in the morning over a cup of tea or maybe...send out a submission. Or...write something new...

Cheers to blogging! I always feel better when I've posted. That's something.
