Am I still that person?

A few weeks ago, my friend and former jogging partner Ellen Sweet sent me this snapshot that she had just discovered while scanning old photographs into her computer. I remembered the picture, and I may even have a copy of it somewhere, but it was something of a shock to see it illuminated on my computer screen. The shot probably dates from the early 1980s when I had first started running along with half of Manhattan. From the beginning Ellen and I challenged ourselves by entering races in…See More

At this year's AWP conference in Chicago, Ellen Cassedy and Nancy K. Miller were part of a panel organized by the University of Nebraska Press on Family Stories.  Kamy Wicoff was in attendance, and loved what they had to say on the subject so much (memoir writers, don't miss these wonderful posts)…

My return journey to Kishinev

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 9:26am 0 Comments

In some ways, this house in Kishinev obsessed me as much as the famous pogrom House Number 13, not least because I had no address for my grandparents. It was--educated guess--the location of the photography studio where my grandparents had their portrait taken. On the back of the cabinet card was the address....I went there twice, on both trips, and tried to imagine my grandparents going there for...…

Rip Van Winkle Parties at Girls Write Now: After the Countdown to Publication

Posted on October 8, 2011 at 8:00am 3 Comments

The pub date of September 1 came and went minus fanfare. Understatement: absolutely nothing happened. I wasn’t devastated because I hadn’t expected anything. At least I hadn’t admitted to myself that I had the slightest anticipation of—I don’t even know what, something. Still, faced with the nothing of the day, I did feel a bit downcast, since I had not succeeded in fooling myself. (Yes, I confess that I was hoping for a miracle, even though I don’t believe in them.) But a few short weeks…

Dear Nancy,

This is fabulous news! Do hold Monday night of the conference for our party, a regular tradition at the conference. I will look forward to seeing you there. I am also excited about your book and look forward to getting my copy, I have already placed an advanced order with Amazon, at least I believe that I did this. I am a bit overwhelmed these days with taking care of my aging and ailing parents. My mother is in the late stages of frontal temporal dementia and frankly, it is just heartbreaking.

Take good care, Laura

Nancy, thanks for the invitation. I've belonged to She Writes for about a year and haven't done much with it. Hope to change that. Georgia

Hi Nancy, Thank you so much for hosting the salon in which I learned more than I ever thought I would know about social media. (I am still sifting through everything!) What a wonderful opportunity to sit in the same room with so many brilliant women. I have started a group you may be interested in -- Writer, PhD*. We would love to hear your thoughts about navigating a writing life and an academic life. All best, Heather Hewett

Working through the pain

Another entry in my "it sucks to get older" category.  Cervical spinal stenosis.  Degenerative Disc Disease.  Cervical Radiculopathy.  Or, as my granny used to call it, "my aching back".  Haven't written a thing in ages because the pain meds make me…See More
