A not so pleasant topic, but gutters are a vital part of your property’s drainage system! When they overflow they can cause minor and major problems for your household. Stop this from happening to you by learning the causes, signs and dangers of overflowing gutters here:

The main and obvious cause of overflow are severe weather conditions including too much rain. Inadequate gutters will not be able to handle the increased load. This can be exacerbated if there aren’t enough gutters or if they’re improperly fixed. While these issues can be linked a lack of guttering on your property is a problem itself. Furthermore, when gutters become clogged with dirt, leaves and moss for example they can no longer function properly. As a result the water will flow down the walls damaging brickwork. This problem can also lead to clogged downspouts. Be aware of these causes so you can act before they become serious.

Check your gutters on a regular basis for signs of overflow. What are these signs? It could be anything from visible leaves and moss to mould. An increase in bird activity around your guttering could be a sign that there is a build-up of organic material - they use it for their nests. Noticed stained brickwork? That means that water has been running freely down the side of your home. Anything in its path to the ground such as wooden window frames and sills will begin to rot. In extreme cases foundations will be liable to flood and become unstable. In addition, fascia boards can become sodden and peel away from the wall, this can lead to grave issues.

Failing to notice the signs of overflowing gutters can lead to the following complications. When water soaks into your roof it can ruin tiles and any belongings you have stored in your attic. You’ll be able to see the consequences of this in the form of mould on the ceilings of your rooms. Mould can cause health issues including headaches, breathing issues and allergies. Water regularly flowing down the side of your home affects any paint and brickwork, resulting in fading. Also, extensive water back-up will seep all the way down to basement level. Any cracks in concrete or driveways will be filled with water that will expand and cause further damage.

Overflowing gutters can quickly become overwhelming. If this happens to you it’s time to call in professional gutter cleaning services. They’ll use state-of-the-art equipment and technology to quickly and effectively clean and clear your gutters. And if there is need for replacement they’ll do this too.
