Any favorite books with Farm, Ranch, Rural setting?

Started by Shanyn Silinski. Last reply by Shanyn Silinski Mar 4, 2011. 2 Replies

Thanks for asking this question Patricia... I'd have to say that some of John Sandford's books really cover their rural area well, as do Stephen Hunter's books with the Swagger family.  Louis l'Amour…Continue

I was a navy brat and we moved every two years. For the last thirty-eight years I have lived with my husband in the country on eight acres surrounded by dairy farms.  We brought four children up here and all four are now city dwellers.  We have always had a garden (it's a lot smaller now) and two dogs.  I love the country and I love writing.  I was the editor of a local magazine called "Country Roots" for six years and I really enjoyed it.  Now I edit a magazine for seniors and hospice patients.  We started a writers' guild twenty years ago and it is still going.

I love on a 58-acre tree farm in the Callahan Mountains of Oregon.  The view is spectacular.  There is a rainy season and a dry season and that took a while to get used to!  We have Boer goats and hens who give us plenty of eggs...and I write all about it in our farm blog:  http://www.campbellkidsfarm.com  and occasionally on http://www.mysouthernheart.com    To have been a city girl, I have fallen in love with the farm life...

I'm a city girl myself, but have a book coming out in May from Macmillan about food in the U.S., some of which, of course, is about farms in various places in the country. The book is nonfiction; it chronicles my travels to find positive alternatives to our trouble food system. Readers will meet all kinds of farmers, gardeners, local food advocates, etc., in its pages. I certainly hope I haven't made any egregious errors in portraying the rural areas I visited; at least I preface everything by saying I've never grown so much as a tomato! You can see more about the book here: www.changecomestodinner.com.

Welcome, Laura!

SheWrites has something for everyone, it seems. When Shanyn started this group with a rural focus, I was excited too as I had grown up in rural Canada!

Here in Ontario, just survived a record setting fierce lightning storm, funnel clouds too!

Beautiful day in the aftermath! Best.

Shanyn, those cattle are beautiful.
As I read your tales of search and rescue, I held my breath until calves were reunited with cows .
Sounds like you are having a very busy spring!
A belated Happy Easter! Happy Poetry Month!

Hi all, I'm a city girl who's had a sheep ranch in the south of Chile for the past six years. I'm new to this group and this world and find it inspiring.

So right, Shanyn! Love those quiet days--great chance to do some writing and to catch up on things.
