The Self-Publishing Debate - Opinions?

Hi Michael: do you have a blog: I think what you wrote could be worked into a very beautiful essay that eventually could lead to a book. We don't often hear from men who experience loss when a wife/l…

I am 61 and a charter feminist and had no problem with your use of the term. I thought that this was upbeat, hopeful and wonderful. In reality the glass ceiling we hit when we sought whole lives for ourselves i.e. getting out of the kitchen and into…

Welcome, Beth. Thank you for the link to "Presence". Flowers evoke well the passage of time and the sense of needing to see beauty in its moment.

Nancy, I like the idea of SheWrites poets getting together and reading some poetry live. That could be a wonderful event. There are many very fine poets on SheWrites.

Hi Sharon: do you know Tom Wayman, or his work? We go back forty years; you and I are the same age. I'm thinking of writing him up on my blog--when and if I make it through his massive novel re "our" era. I think he should have written a memoir, but…

A Moment of Victory

Just received word that I've received the Generations Award in Poetry for my manuscript, The Heart Fills with Water...what a relief, after the dicey business of the resumption of my career after years writing but buried in ranching in Colorado.
Book will be out next year and I'll have some bucks in the bank.

The Award is a private endowment of the Stamm Trust for a civil rights advocate gifted in the arts.

Memoir, Art, Life-- Discussion and Debate

My mission when I began writing my memoir Nightfall in Verona was not to write the kind of coming-to-terms personal narrative that is in vogue today, but to tell a good story and write that story beautifully and meaningfully. My book has an ostensibly simple and inherently poetic subject: it chronicles my relationship with an Italian… Continue

Star-crossed at 4 a.m....

This January, after twenty-seven years lost from myself and the writer me, I began an account of a trip I took to Europe in 1973 with two friends to recover from an affair gone awry. We bought a VW bus in Frankfurt and adventured our way through Austria into Tuscany and Verona, where I met a young man who led me to the infamous Juliet balcony for our first kiss. I took his address with me to Corsica, asking him to join us; he replied with a letter asking me to come to Reggio Calabria at the toe… Continue

An Ugly but Indispensable Friend

Anyone dealing with anger issues has probably tried a number of things to get it all to dissipate, like beating a pillow with a plastic baseball bat, writing spiteful notes/e-mails and tearing them up/deleting them, journaling, driving into the country and screaming, or perhaps in not dealing with whatever it is, losing it.

Once upon a daydream I had made enchilada tortes for dinner and in the midst of a family free-for-all, had tossed them out into the snow like Frisbees. After we all calmed d… Continue

A Voice of Her Own...

Remember that song of Edith Piaf's "Regrette Rien.." I Regret Nothing?

Nice work if you can get it, right?

This morning I woke up regretting much and feeling less than everyone else-- a state that has plagued me for years.

I sat up and said the following to myself: I am a fellow of the National Endowment of the Arts. I have had three collections of poetry-- two chapbooks and one small press book-- published. I was appointed full time Poet in Residence to the St. Paul Schools and my work with… Continue

Delighted to have you join us the Novelist group, Jenne'. You might jump in by telling us what you’re working on in the “Show Me Your Novel and I’ll Show You Mine” discussion if you're not too uncomfortable talking about what you're working on.
