Whether you work from home full-time or just need a space to focus, it's important to have a home workspace that is comfortable and helps you be more productive and creative. You may already have an area in your home in the form of a study or home office that needs to be updated, or you might be looking to remodel your home as you enter your golden years. Whatever the reason, here are some ideas for making your home workspace the best it can be.

Temperature Control

Trying to get work done when it's too hot or too cold can be unbearable. If it's too cold you can lose focus easily trying to keep yourself warm and if it's too hot you might be sweaty or risk getting drowsy. None of these things are good for productivity. Keeping your space at a comfortable temperature should be high on your priority list. Unfortunately, not all homes and apartment complexes are blessed with central heat and air conditioning. In places with hot summers and cold winters having a space heater or window AC unit is a must. If you are lucky enough to have central heat and AC you will need to make sure they are working properly. An HVAC company will be able to do maintenance and repairs to make sure your entire home is just the right temperature.

Furniture

Do you want your writing space to be more traditional with a desk or two and a standard office chair? Or, do you want to be a little more free and open with your space? Either way having the right furniture can greatly increase your productivity. For the more standard setup make sure that your desk is a good height, has all the drawers you need and matches with the rest of the room. It is also important to find a chair that's comfortable for long stretches but also encourages good posture so you don’t strain your back, neck, and shoulders. If you want to be a little more free with your space you might want to invest in a sofa or recliner, maybe add a heated throw or blanket and decorative pillows.

Lighting

Lighting is possibly the most important thing in a work environment. Having to strain your eyes to read papers or look at a monitor and keyboard can not only make working more difficult but can also cause health problems like headaches and poor vision. Making sure that you have proper lighting in the work area can be more than just adding a few lamps onto your desk. You can also look into bulbs that are dimmable and have multiple color options so you can adjust the lighting depending on what you're doing. If you're typing on a computer, for instance, you might want very bright lights but if you're reading a book you may want the lights a bit dimmer. Feel free to get creative with where and how to place your lighting in your space!

You will probably be spending a lot of time in this room, so it needs to be a place where you can be comfortable and creative and these things are a great way to get started.
