On June 3, 2011, THE SUBMISSION MISSION (click HERE to join the She Writes group) had its second live chat. Out of that discussion and other posts since, we’ve developed some specific ideas about where to submit our writing. Here are some links! http://www.pw.org/literary_magazines / Poets & Writers has a great database, which you can narrow by genre and which lists reading periods. Each entry includes a link to the journal’s website.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/crwropps-b/ / Poet Allison Joseph keeps a running list of all kinds of writing, including contests (and even job openings). She usually adds items daily, and you can subscribe to the list.

http://www.erikadreifus.com/newsletter/ / Fiction writer Erika Dreifus offers The Practical Writer, a monthly e-newsletter that includes calls for submissions.

http://www.newpages.com/literary-magazines/ / NewPages is another good database of journals, and each entry has a link to the individual journal’s website.

http://dirtcakes.org/ dirtcakes editor Catherine Keefe joined the June live chat and encouraged She Writers to submit to this innovative, relatively new literary journal. Each issue is dedicated to a United Nations Millennium Goal.

http://www.missourireview.com/ / An editor from The Missouri Review responded to a recent VIDA report on the gender disparity in the Best American series by noting that publication rates by gender match submissions rates gender, TMR welcomes more submissions from women writers.

http://www.tinhouse.com/home / Tin House had a similar response to an earlier VIDA count: “The bottom line at Tin House is that we are aware of the gender disparity, we are concerned about these numbers, and we are committed to redoubling our efforts to solicit women writers. […]Agents of female writers, publishers of female writers, and especially female writers, please send us your work.”

http://www.lsu.edu/thesouthernreview/ / The Southern Review also looked at their submission rates and discovered a gender disparity in the slush pile. I mention this because my essay “Strange Attraction: John Wayne and Me” appears in the most recent issue and because The Southern Review was the only place I submitted that piece.

http://brevity.wordpress.com/visit-brevity-magazine/ / Brevity did the gender count and discovered, if anything, they favor writing by women. Okay, then.

Remember, The Submission Mission is not about quotas. Sure, the project was instigated as a response to the VIDA counts and other like stories, so it is premised, in part, on the desire to give editors, agents, and readers more access to more writing by women. We should take submission rates out of the gender disparity discussion. Really, though, The Submission Mission is about our work as women writers, our writing lives, and encouraging each other to set and reach reasonable goals that demonstrate the value of what we are doing as writers.
