So many people write on a regular basis these days. People write books, articles, school papers, blog posts, letters, advertisements, e-mails, short stories, etc. Some people write for leaving, some people write for fun, some people write because they have to and some people combine all those things. If you write not only for yourself, editing can be very important. You don’t want people to know that you sometimes write “your” instead of “you’re”, right? I also write every day and I make mistakes as every human being. However, I have some very good help from different online tools. Here are some of my favorite editing tools that I suggest you trying.
This is a very complex tool that does a great job when it comes to editing. Naturally, it checks a paper for grammar and spelling mistakes, but apart from that, it also looks for overused words and phrases, dull sentences, plagiarism, clichés, repeated phrases, etc. You can use a free version, as I do, or get a premium one if you need some more editing features.
Hemingway editor is another useful online app for editing. You can both write and edit using this tool. Everything is explained very clearly on the homepage. The app does a great job in highlighting too long and complicated sentences, looking for an excessive use of adverbs, difficult words, passive voice, etc. I really like the site’s design; everything is clear and clever. Every type of mistake is highlighted in different color and you get a readability grade for your paper at the end.
Well, the name speaks for itself – Copyscape searches your paper for plagiarism. And it does a really good gob with it. Plagiarism is the last thing that a good writer wants to face, so checking every work for it is a must. Copyscape has both free and paid versions, so you can choose what you prefer more.
If you use any quotes or ideas of other people, you should mention where you get this information not to violate and copyright laws. If you need your bibliography to be arranged in some specific style, you can use Bibme. It offers creating citations in Chicago, MLA, Turabian and APA styles. Don’t forget to give credit to other people’s works, they put some effort into creating these works, it should be respected.
GoHunters – proofreading and editing service
I use this one when I need to edit some serious papers. The service is not free, although it’s quite inexpensive. It is created for students, but they edit different kinds of papers. I really admire the work they are doing. The editors there manage to find some mistakes I would never notice. After their work my papers look just perfect and I don’t have to worry about anything. So, if you have any important papers to edit, I suggest you doing it with GoHunters. In any case, professional editors will do a better job than any online tools.
Grammarly – Instant Grammar Check
If your only concern is your grammar, you can use this simple tool. This site is very well constructed and it does a great job. It corrects different types of grammar mistakes improving your writing. It also gives you tips on how you can improve your text and which words should better be replaced.
Merriam-Webster – Dictionary and Thesaurus
If you notice that your writing has a lot of repeated words, you should change some of them to make your text more readable and interesting. A dictionary or a thesaurus would be a great way out here. I use Merriam-Webster for such occasions, it always helps.
Well, this name also speaks for itself. The program finds typical clichés and suggests you changing them. This is a very handy tool if you want your paper be original and not full of banal phrases.
