In previous posts I've discussed how important it is to ask your fans for help—and to show them exactly how to do so. The same can be said when reaching out to people who aren’t already fans. If you make it easy for them to say yes, they are more likely to say yes!

Here’s an example: When my seventh novel (Wait for the Rain) was released, I reached out to the New York City alumnae chapter of my sorority, which has a book club. I offered to attend their meeting and answer questions not just about Wait for the Rain, but also about my life as an author. They agreed, and we set a date! I sent my headshot and bio, plus an image of all of my books, which they used in the (electronic) invitation they created to promote the event.

Once I had the invitation for the New York event in hand, I reached out to a few other chapters of the same sorority in different cities where I would soon be traveling, including the one in my hometown. I proposed doing a similar event for those groups—then shared the invitation so they could use it as a template. I knew by making it easier for them to organize something by providing a template, the chances of their wanting to do an event would be higher. And I was right! Within a few days I had scheduled two events like the one in New York.

People are busy, so when you approach them about your book, keep that in mind. Something as simple as a pretty template might be the difference between a yes and a no.
