The road from aspiring author to published author can be tedious, frustrating, and stressful, but it can also be inspiring, fulfilling, and downright fun. No matter where you currently are on your journey, I recommend keeping track of it with photos and videos. Visual documentation of all the hard work you’ve put into pursuing your dream is not only powerful motivation to keep going when you’re feeling low, but it can also be helpful in your marketing efforts.

For example:

If you’re still in the writing phase, take pictures and videos of yourself at your desk/cafe/etc., as well as of other things related to the story you’re crafting. In my first novel, Perfect on Paper, several places the main character frequented in San Francisco were real places I used to frequent. Oh how I wish I had photos of them to share with my fans! But I don’t live in San Francisco anymore, and many of those spots have closed their doors. Darn.

For example:

If you attend a book club that has chosen your book, post a photo or two to social media and tag everyone in them. With luck those tagged will share the posts. You can also use the photos when pitching yourself to additional book clubs—evidence of what a fun time was had by all!

For example:

You start an Instagram account to promote your book, then think, What am I supposed to post? If you take photos and videos throughout the writing and publishing process, as well as at events such as book clubs (see above), you’ll have a substantial folder of material at your disposal.

I have exactly two photos of myself working on Perfect on Paper. TWO. And zero videos. For something that consumed my life for YEARS. I wish I had more, because now that I have legitimate fans, I know they would love to see me in action, creating a story they love. I can’t go back in time, but you can learn from my regrets!
